According to air transport data released by the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), Brazilian airlines still underperform in the pre-pandemic period. The agency reported a drop in demand for passenger transport (measured in paid passenger kilometers transported - RPK) of 22% compared to August 2019. The supply in the month decreased by 19.8% in the same comparison.
However, the numbers continue to show a slow, gradual and sustained recovery. The participation of airlines was 35.5% for Latam, 34.5% for Azul and 29.7% for Gol.
The aviation and tourism sector was the most affected by the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. In August, more than 5.5 million passengers were transported through the country's airports, but the number is 30.2% lower than in August 2019.
The average occupancy of aircraft in the month was 80.1%, which represents a drop of 2.9% compared to 2019. Domestic cargo transported also had a drop of 11.3% in the same comparison. The absolute number in tons of cargo was 33 461.
The international travel sector was heavily impacted by the pandemic and continues to show timid numbers, with demand falling by 76.4% and supply by 65.5%. Cargo transportation, in turn, showed a growth of 25.5%
The comparison of these indicators with the same period in 2019 has been carried out by the Agency considering that aviation was not under the impact of the pandemic caused by Covid-19, which has affected air transport for at least a year and a half.
