On Wednesday, the European Commission announced that 16 major airlines had agreed to reimburse passengers in the event of cancellation of flights within the European Union, in accordance with law.

“It is good news for consumers that airlines have cooperated during the dialogues and committed to respect passengers' rights and improve their communication,” said EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders.

The move happened because, during the phase when many flights had to be canceled because of the pandemic, the companies did not fulfill their commitment to reimburse passengers who had already purchased the tickets.

"In the initial phase of the pandemic, some airlines offered vouchers to passengers. They were acting against EU consumer protection rules. This was unacceptable," said Reynders.

Experts say the changes are very important to restoring consumer confidence in companies, which were so heavily affected (and still are) by the pandemic, in order to speed the recovery.
