In its fleet of aircraft, Lufthansa cargo plans to retire the latest MD-11 tri-jet. In addition to being the last in the fleet, it is the last McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft registered in Europe. The plane will be retired on October 15, with its last landing at Frankfurt Airport, and will be handed over to another company.

The jet has been operating by the company for over 23 years. According to Lufthansa cargo, the flagship plane now has a “Goodbye” and “Thank you MD-11” stamped on the fuselage. The MD-11 will still fly to Cairo, Egypt, Tel Aviv, Israel, and Chicago and New York, United States before being replaced by the Boeing 777F.

The Boeing 777F is bigger, has more cargo capacity and is more economical. It is the most efficient cargo plane in its class.

This MD-11 and other former retirees will now fly on Western Global Airlines. In total, 19 MD-11 units have flown by Lufthansa since 1998.
