Recently, Lufthansa Cargo and Kuehne Nagel announced an exclusive partnership to promote CO2 neutral fuel for aviation.

The two European companies have pledged to support the world's first synthetic crude oil production site in Wertle/Emsland, Germany, buying the equivalent of 20 tonnes or 25,000 liters annually. This fuel is considered the fuel of the future as it can reduce the carbon footprint of aviation. This production unit is operated by the NGO Atmosfair de Bonn.

“We clearly see the key to a sustainable reduction of our emissions in flight operations in researching and using synthetic and sustainable aviation fuels. The fact that we are now pioneering this power generation technology together with Kuehne Nagel makes us particularly proud and shows once again that we are actively addressing our climate protection challenges,” says Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo.

Yngve Ruud, Kuehne Nagel Board Member responsible for Air Logistics, said: “By the way, Kuehne Nagel customers can avoid carbon emissions from their shipments with our sustainable fuel solutions and I am delighted to see that this moment came as the long-term solution for aviation. By securing the first 'liquid-power' fuel production together with Lufthansa Cargo, we are sending a strong message of commitment and collaboration, inviting our industry colleagues and customers to join us in creating the low-carbon economy of the future now today".

The CO2-neutral fuels, called SAF (in Portuguese, Sustainable Aviation Fuel), are essential to achieve CO2-neutral aviation. They can be produced in a variety of ways. Lufthansa Cargo and Kuehne Nagel will use SAF of biogenic origin, ie synthetic paraffin based on used cooking oils, for example. This form of fuel, called power-to-liquid, is produced from electricity, generated in a regenerative way, reusing water and CO2. Because of this process, PTL-based jet fuel is considered CO2-neutral. Electric fuels are still in the development phase for industrial production, but they are already considered a long-term alternative to conventional paraffin or biogenic SAF, as theoretically they will be produced without limits on availability.

The Berlin-based NGO Atmosfair de Bonn aims to protect the climate and has built its own factory for the production of so-called syncrude, an alternative to fossil fuel, produced using power-to-liquid. This first industrial plant so far is unique in Germany. Regular operation is scheduled by Atmosfair for the first quarter of 2022.
