The Greenliner Program is aimed at initiatives and technologies that contribute to carbon-free aviation. Etihad Airways will make a flight celebrating the two years of this program. The flight will be on the 23rd of October from Heathrow to Abu Dhabi.
Since 2019, the program has been using an Etihad Boeing 787 model airplane to test sustainable improvements and, in partnership with Boeing, has already accumulated several actions, such as maintaining the highest possible aerodynamic efficiency, weight reduction, sustainable fuel use and the commitment of companies to research and development of more ecologically correct technologies.
“Since Etihad and Boeing signed the Greenliner agreement, the two companies have focused on providing sustainability solutions for the aviation industry despite the pandemic. achieved in the last two years and a great flight for Etihad passengers who will see what the future of commercial air travel looks like. The fact that sustainability remained on the agenda during the pandemic is a testament to the importance of the topic for Etihad – the Sustainability challenges faced globally will still exist when COVID-19 is no longer an issue,” said Mohammad Al Bulooki, COO of Etihad Aviation Group.
Etihad's Greenliner aircraft is expected to emit 72% less CO2 in total and 56% less per unit of payload when compared to the equivalent flight in 2019. The aircraft will be fueled with a mixture of 38% SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) , in order to ensure that the source of part of the fuel burned is renewable and with lower emissions.
During the flight, the idea is to keep the weight as low as possible to contribute to low emissions, so that passengers will receive incentives from the company to fly without bags or with light luggage. In addition, they will receive stainless steel cutlery and locally sourced food.
The plane's route will also be carefully planned to minimize emissions as much as possible.
Another interesting attitude is that for every passenger on board, Etihad will plant a tree that will help offset future flights.
