The Zephyr S project – the leading solar-powered aircraft project – successfully completed tests in the United States in 2021. The announcement was made by Airbus on September 13, when the most ambitious Zephyr flight to date took place. The flight took place in Arizona.
The project consists of a stratospheric solar-electric unmanned aerial system (UAS). The test aircraft has a wingspan of 25 m and weighs less than 75 kg.
“Working with Airbus and the Zephyr team during the 2021 flight campaign, significant progress was made towards demonstrating HAPS as a capability. This summer's activities represent an important step in operationalizing the stratosphere,” said James Gavin, Director, Future Defense Equipment Capabilities Group
