According to Taiwanese Defense Minister Qiu Guozheng, China will be fully prepared to attack Taiwan by 2025 in order to forcibly resolve its dispute with Taipei. However, Prime Minister Tsai says the country will do what is necessary to prevent an attack.

For the Chinese government, Taiwan is a breakaway province that it says will be taken by force if necessary, and the island nation would be worried.

Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen said China has not given up on its desire to annex Taiwan and says that after many years of military and expansionist investment in the Taiwan Straits, China would be “replacing its commitment to a peaceful resolution with a aggressive posture”. She adds that the consequences would be catastrophic for peace and democracy in Asia if the island were to become Chinese possession.

On Monday, a record 56 Chinese warplanes, including 40 fighter jets and 12 H-6 bombers, were sent to Taiwan. Last week, as China celebrated its National Day, at least 150 Chinese war aircraft entered Taiwan's air defense zone.

Guozheng said, “By 2025, China will reduce cost and wear to a minimum. She has the capacity now, but she won't start a war easily, having to take many other things into consideration.”

Taiwan does not seek confrontation, says Tsai, but will do whatever it takes to defend itself. According to Guozheng, the current situation in the Taiwan Straits is the most tense in 40 years.

Last Tuesday, US President Joe Biden said he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and that both agreed to abide by Taiwan's agreement.
