ASL Aviation Holdings, a company that offers various air transport services, whether freight or passengers, wants its freighters to be converted to use hydrogen. ASL plans to purchase up to ten such conversion kits for the ATR 72 turboprop for installation on its current or future aircraft.

The announcement of this letter of intent was made by Universal Hydrogen, a leader in the decarbonization of aviation through the use of hydrogen. The agreement provides that ASL will provide an ATR-72 for testing the kit and for its certification.

ASL converted aircraft must be operated by companies specialized in cargo service in Europe.

“Air cargo has a unique opportunity to lead the aviation industry as it moves to meet ambitious carbon emissions targets. At ASL, we are committed to pioneering the introduction of new emission reduction technologies into our current fleet, and hydrogen has a significant role to play with planes like the ATR 72,” said Dave Andrew, CEO of ASL Aviation Holdings.

The companies will have another agreement aimed at developing long-term fuel services, so Universal Hydrogen will supply the hydrogen needed by ASL.

“Aviation cannot wait to act for a decade or more before new types of aircraft become available and, working with Universal Hydrogen, we can create a bridge to new aircraft that will allow us to immediately reduce our carbon footprint in line with environmental sustainability commitments in the ASL Group's ESG Policy”, he adds.

The agreement comes at a time when airlines are focusing their efforts on becoming more sustainable. Some, like Ryanair, say the efforts should initially be on cleaner fuels rather than electrification.
