In September, the number of passengers passing through Heathrow airport was slightly below 40% of pre-pandemic levels. According to the airport, this is a consequence of government decisions, which allowed European rivals to enjoy a stronger resurgence during the summer period. According to statistics, traffic in North America is only 25% of 2019 levels.

As for cargo, which is carried in the holds of passenger planes, the volume dropped by around 8% in 2019, reflecting how travel restrictions have hurt UK exports and supply chains, Heathrow said.

Ahead of the COP26 summit in the UK next month, Heathrow also called on the UK government to show leadership in implementing policies to increase production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

John Holland-Kaye, Chief Executive of Heathrow, said: “We should aim for 2019 to be the peak year for fossil fuel use in global aviation. The UK government can show real leadership in decarbonising aviation at COP26 by establishing a progressively growing mandate and plan to use contracts for difference to accelerate the transition to sustainable jet fuel in the UK, which will protect the benefits of flying for future generations”.
