The Zero association, through the Airport Tracker tool, launched by the European Federation of Transport and Environment, showed that flights in Portugal accounted for a good part of the greenhouse gas emissions (7.1%) throughout the country.
"The flights associated with the main Portuguese airports, considered only in one direction (and not a return trip), resulted in 4.75 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2018", said the association.
Just 20 airports were responsible for more than a quarter of total CO2 emissions (27%). The environmental impact of more than 1300 airports has been calculated in total.
Among the main airports in Portugal, Lisbon airport was responsible for 3.03 million tons of greenhouse gases, or about 64% of the total Portuguese emissions from aircraft in 2018. Porto airport was in second place , with 9.77 million, and Faro.
Another worrying fact: 346 airports were analyzed in Europe, of which only 10 are responsible for more than 42% of CO2 emissions in the entire region, four of which are in two countries: Germany and the United Kingdom.
What's more, the association says recent gains in aircraft efficiency are not enough to combat emissions problems, as they have been offset by increased traffic.
"In the future, battery-powered aircraft may be suitable for shorter flights and hydrogen-powered aircraft are more promising for long-haul travel. However, since even major manufacturers believe that traditional jet engines will dominate by 2050, these technologies will probably not arrive in time to limit the sector's climate impact to meet global decarbonization targets," he warns.
