Last Tuesday (19), the new Brazilian airline, Itapemirim Transportes Aéreos (ITA), carried out its first flight with an all-female crew, in order to celebrate the International Day to Combat Breast Cancer.
The flight was commanded by Jaqueline Guglielmi, alongside co-pilot Michele Santos and flight attendants Mariana Alvarenga, Vivi Loch, Rochele Ferrari and Kissy Barbosa. Also on board were the adviser of the Itapemirim Group, Silvana Piva, and the Vice President of Corporate Governance, Karina Mendonça.
The aircraft, an A320, departed at 11:45 am from the São Paulo-Guarulhos airport and landed in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, carrying 158 passengers. The return flight to São Paulo was operated by the same crew, taking off from Florianópolis at 1:30 pm, with 150 passengers on board.
With this flight, the company aims to show its recognition to all women. At ITA, the participation rate of female pilots is higher than that of most airlines, and among captains and co-pilots, 8% are women. ANAC data show that in Brazil only 3% of pilots are women.
Commander Jaqueline stated, during the flight: “this crew was lucky to find in Itapemirim a company that supports and fights for gender equality. This is very important these days. At the Itapemirim Group, women occupy different roles, such as directors, coordination, customer service, supervision, commander – like me – and bus valet. After all, every woman's place is wherever she wants, even if she is driving a bus or in command of a commercial aircraft like this one”.
During this flight, the company also celebrated the International Day to Combat Breast Cancer. Karina Mendonça, the vice president, told her story of healing and fighting the disease. “Cancer is not a death sentence. It's a warning. A warning that we need to stop, look inside ourselves and take care of our health, our diet, healthy habits, our rest. To live better with the family, to enjoy even more the friends who are by our side”, she said.
Karina also took the opportunity to guide the passengers to carry out the self-examination. “The appeal I bring here is: take care. Get to know your body. Visit the doctor. Take the periodic exams. We know that the sooner any type of cancer is discovered, including breast cancer, the chances of a cure are even greater”, she said.
