The Swedish Air Force will carry out, in conjunction with the Finnish Air Force, an air defense exercise that will take place between 21 and 27 October. The training, called Luftförsvarsövning 2021 (LFO 21) or Air Defense Exercise 2021, will be based on a local scenario.
A spokesman for the country said, “The Air Force is practicing against the threats and challenges of the future. Sweden is worth defending, we need a strong military and civil defense. We cannot take our democracy, peace and freedom for granted.”
The exercise aims to practice tactical air force capacity management with high accessibility and usability in a high-conflict setting with 24-hour-a-day multi-day operations. In addition, the training, which will take place mainly in the southern and southeastern part of Sweden, includes planning, management and implementation of air defense operations, as well as contributing to building a stronger defense and increasing the overall capability of the Armed Forces to face an attack on Sweden. The exercise also aims to practice cooperation and coordination with other branches of defense, such as the Navy, which together with the Air Force, develops the skill for combined naval combat.
Furthermore, Finland's participation is of utmost importance, as the country fully participates in Sweden's air defense as part of reciprocal defense cooperation. Countries build security together while increasing both operational capabilities.
The spokesman also stated that “the security policy situation in our region and in the world has changed. Therefore, the government decided to strengthen the Swedish defense capacity by increasing the military capacity in Sweden and the surrounding areas. Our strength must be able to defend our independence. By practicing, we maintain our readiness and can act quickly if something unforeseen happens.”
In parts of the exercise, low flights and supersonic flights will also be carried out.
