The Philippine Air Force (PAF) will acquire five units of the Lockheed Martin C-130J as a replacement for the old C-130B/H. The purpose of the purchase is to increase the military transport capacity. In addition, the PAF intends to use the planes for humanitarian aid.
The acquisition was approved by the Chamber of Deputies, in order to contribute to the program of modernization of the armed forces, which is a priority measure of the Duterte government.
Allen Paredes, lieutenant general, head of the PAF, said the planes will be disaster response, repatriation and troop deployment.
The C-130H that arrived earlier this year had an accident in Sulu on July 4, in which more than 50 people lost their lives.
