During a sustainability study, Airbus, together with Dassault Avviation, ONERA, the French Ministry of Transport and Safran, performed a flight with an Airbus A319neo fully fueled with SAF, unmixed.
During the Oct. 28 flight, the Airbus A319neo's CFM LEAP-1A engine was fully fueled with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), derived from hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids such as used cooking oil and other fats. The fuel was supplied by Total Energies.
Paraffinic hydrocarbon fuel is free of aromatic molecules and sulfur, and its burning generates fewer unwanted by-products. Test results will be analyzed and should start appearing in 2022.
Contributing to the goal of zeroing the sector's carbon emissions by 2050, the test aims to deploy the SAF for more aircraft, thus reducing the environmental impact of the activity in the next generation of business jets and single-aisle aircraft.
