In a new step towards the decarbonization of the sector, Airbus, in association with other companies, made a long-haul flight in regulated transatlantic airspace (GAT) with two A350 aircraft just 3 km apart, departing from Toulouse, in France to Montreal, Canada.

The flight was planned by Airbus and the airlines to ensure that the greatest sustainability could be achieved without compromising safety.

More than 6 tons of CO2 were not emitted, meaning a 5% reduction in fuel. The effect is similar to what is seen in some migratory birds, which fly in formation to reduce the energy needed.

The lead aircraft was positioned to reduce the energy required for the aircraft behind to overcome air resistance, thus decreasing energy expenditure and increasing fuel economy.

With Airbus' Fello’fly program, the next step is to obtain certification for this model of flight, so that it can be applied by companies and reduce CO2 emission levels.

The program, launched in 2019, aims to test and put into practice innovative technologies for aviation.
