Eve, the Embraer company responsible for developing eVTOL, and airline Widerøe entered into a partnership with the aim of developing Urban Air Mobility, in order to enable the implementation of eVTOL operations in Scandinavia.

In the sustainability project called Widerøe Zero, the companies aim at a new type of operation with low-noise, zero-emission eVTOL, connecting people who live in mountainous and difficult-to-access regions.

The airline also plans to develop a zero-emissions electric aircraft by 2030 to replace its entire fleet. Furthermore, although the project is focused on urban mobility, Widerøe wants eVTOL to be used in rural areas as well.

Widerøe was the first to use jets from the E-jets E-2 family, starting operations on the E190-E2 in April 2018.
