After some media outlets said that Spain was interested in replacing its Harrier IIs with the newest American F-35A/B fighter, Spain's Ministry of Defense denied such information, as the focus is completely on the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), which is being developed in partnership with France and Germany.
“The Spanish government does not have the budget to enter into any other project besides the one that is already underway. We excluded entry into the F-35 project. Our investment commitment is in the FCAS,” a defense ministry spokeswoman told Reuters on 9 November.
Speculation that Spain was already in talks to acquire the F-35 came after a defense display in Madrid earlier this month when officials said the F-35 could be a candidate to replace the EAV-8B in the Navy and the EF-18M in the Air Force.
A separate report in the London-based Janes defense publication last week contributed to speculation as it was "official" information about the acquisition.
