Continuing with the ambition of having all its aircraft capable of receiving 100% of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Airbus carried out a flight with a helicopter fully fueled with Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
The Airbus flight aims to assess the impact of fuel other than the current mixture that is certified: 50% SAF in helicopters. The spent fuel was derived from used cooking oil and was supplied by a petrochemical company.
Although the test results have yet to be studied, the use of this fuel provides up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to commonly used aviation kerosene.
"Although all Airbus helicopters are certified to fly on a mixture of up to 50% of SAF combined with kerosene, our company's ambition is to have its helicopters certified to fly on 100% of this fuel within a decade," said Deputy -Executive President of Engineering and Technical Director of Airbus Helicopters, Stefan Thome.
