During the air show in Dubai last Sunday (14), Airbus revealed a very large order for 255 single-aisle aircraft from the A321neo family, contrary to the sense that after the pandemic there will be no more orders in the order of hundreds of units.
The Customer was IndiGo, which includes several low-cost carriers such as Wizz Air (which ordered 102 aircraft, 75 A321neo and 27 A321XLR), Frontier (which ordered 39 aircraft, all A321neo), Volaris (which ordered 39 A321neo) and JetSmart (which ordered 21 A321neo and 2 A321XLR.
At the 2017 Dubai air show, IndiGo Partners was responsible for another large order, for 430 jets from the A320neo family. According to IndiGo, this new order does not replace the previous one. However, Volaris and JetSmart will convert 38 orders of A320neo into A321neo in their existing aircraft backlog.
“This order reaffirms the commitment of our portfolio airlines to consistent growth over the next decade. The Airbus A321neo and A321XLR have industry-leading efficiency, low unit costs and a substantially reduced carbon footprint compared to previous models,” said Bill Franke, managing partner at Indigo Partners.
The order also gives the European manufacturer more impetus, as the aeronautical sector was the most affected, so Airbus received orders for just 27 aircraft in the last 9 months of 2020, when the pandemic emerged and was strongest.
However, Airbus and the A320 Family appear to be recovering well as they account for 257 of the 292 aircraft ordered in the first 10 months of 2021.
“We are pleased to further expand our relationship with our major airlines Indigo Partners, Wizz, Frontier, Volaris and JetSMART, who have acted quickly and decisively in recent months to position themselves for this historic order as the pandemic wears off and the world wants a more sustainable flight,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus Commercial Director and Airbus International Director.
