On Sunday, November 14, during the Dubai 2021 air show, Yury Slyusar, managing director of the Russian United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), gave the information that Sukhoi has started production of Checkmate prototypes, supplementing with the information that the first flight will be in 2023 and the fighter will be mass produced from 2026.
“The Komsomolsk-on-Amur factory started building several Checkmate fighters at the same time,” he said. The fifth-generation fighter will receive the modified AL-41F1 engine (Izdelie 117). The modification of the engine will be made with a view to reliability for the application in a single engine fighter.
Checkmate was developed by the Sukhoi designer office (which is part of the state-owned company Rostec). The presentation took place during MAKS-2021 in July, in the Moscow region.
Another relevant information is that the fighter can be converted to an unmanned version and to a two-seat version, which must be used in training.
