The CEO of UAE airline Etihad Airwways, Tony Douglas, warned on Wednesday (17) that the company may need to reduce the order it had previously placed, for around 50 aircraft, between the Airbus A320neo and the new Boeing 777X.

Etihad is undergoing a restructuring process due to its poor performance over the past few years. In addition, the company seeks to grow sustainably and compete with Emirates and Qatar. Etihad has 93 aircraft in its fleet.

The company would have ordered 26 units of the A320neo and 25 of the 777X, which suffered delays in delivery due to the pandemic and consequent stoppage in the supply chain. With doubts about the date of delivery of the aircraft and about the demand that will come after the pandemic, the company is evaluating the acquisition. However, Etihad has not yet made a public decision on this.

According to the company, the fleet of 30 Airbus A320 units should be halved, while more profitable routes are sought. The five units of the Boeing 777-300ER are to be discontinued, while 10 units of the Airbus A380 are already out of operation as well.

Etihad will continue to receive deliveries of Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner, however, the fleet will comprise 65 aircraft. “When the market returns to sustainability, we will see how we scale up. We're never going to go crazy again,” Douglas said.
