First two cases of the new strain of the COVID-19 virus are found at Guarulhos Airport

During Tuesday (November 30), the São Paulo State Department of Health confirmed two cases of travelers who were infected and brought the new strain of the virus that causes COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) to Brazil. Gene sequencing was performed by the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and the variant was confirmed.
The two positive cases are a 41-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman. The two came from South Africa. The passengers disembarked on 23 November. However, before the trip back to South Africa, they both tested positive in PCR tests on the 25th of November. In this ocasion. Patients had only mild symptoms. They are under monitoring by the State and Municipal Surveillance of São Paulo, as well as their families.
"In view of the identification and testing with a positive result for Covid-19, the CIEVS Network, linked to the Ministry of Health, must monitor cases in accordance with the current surveillance system in Brazil, to assess health conditions and direct individuals to services health care, as well as for the adoption of COVID-19 prevention and control measures”, reads in a note from Anvisa.
The passengers' flight to Brazil took place before the inter-ministerial ordinance that temporarily banned flights that departed or passed from South Africa to Brazil.
