The Ômicron variant of the coronavirus is raising a worldwide alert. Ordinance 660, dated November 27, authorizes the entry of international travelers into Brazil upon presentation of a document proving that the COVID-19 test has been carried out with a negative or undetectable result within 24 hours before boarding. However, proof of vaccination is not required.
Brazilians who traveled abroad recently report that there is a lack of standard in sanitary protocols when they arrive at Guarulhos airport.
While some report that they were approached by agents of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) to present a negative PCR test and receive a recommendation to quarantine, Others report that they have not undergone any type of questioning on national soil. In addition, some travelers report disorganization and crowding within the Arrivals area.
“This new variant aggregates a large number of mutations, we don't know, it's too early, but it's a real threat. Because it genetically aggregates, characteristics of variants with a high degree of transmission and the ability to escape our immunological capacity. So containment measures have never been so important”, says infectologist Rosana Richtmann.
Guarulhos Airport is the largest in Latin America, handling 2.5 million passengers every month, including three weekly flights to Ethiopia and two to Angola. With this justification, the mayor of the city of Guarulhos, Gustavo Henric Costa, known as Guti, asked yesterday (7) via letter to the minister of infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, that security measures be tightened on international flights and that the receipt of vaccination becomes required.
The document asks, in addition to the test within 24 hours before boarding, to observe cases in which there is a need for quarantine and the requirement for proof of vaccination. The document also cites the uncertainty in relation to the transmissibility of omicron and in relation to the effectiveness of vaccines against this variant.
“The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the WHO (World Health Organization), based on experiences with previous variants, advocated proactivity by countries and the implementation of precautionary measures to delay the entry of the new variant in countries until acquisition of greater scientific knowledge”, explained Guti.
The document was also sent to the Ministries of Civil House, Health, Defense and Justice and Public Security.
