According to the Legal Framework for Advanced Fuels, Bill No. 1873/21, Brazil needs to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The National Secretary of Civil Aviation, Ronei Glanzmann, participated in a meeting on decarbonization and price reduction in the air sector this Wednesday (8), at the House Mines and Energy Commission and concluded that the production and use of SAF it can lower the operating cost of aviation.
The fuel currently used is imported and can represent between 30% and 40% of airline operating costs. The price of aviation kerosene (QAV) has weighed heavily on companies – and on the price of tickets. The price of aviation kerosene is pegged to the US dollar, which contributes to its high price.
However, the surprise: the gasoline we use in cars is much more expensive than the QAV (on average, 67%). In October, a liter of QAV (aviation kerosene) averaged R$3.787, while regular gasoline cost R$6.341 at the pump, according to a survey by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP).
Despite this, the QAV, from January to October, registered an accumulated increase of 71.1%. The increase is much greater than that registered by gasoline: 44.8%.
“Brazil has one of the most expensive fuels on the planet, with a direct impact on aviation costs and, obviously, on the costs and prices that reach the consumer. They have soared up this year, up until now”, according to Eduardo Sanovicz, president of the Brazilian Association of Airline Companies (Abear).
The QAV price paid by the companies incorporates the costs of Petrobras (74%), distributors (5%), imports (4%) and airport (1%), in addition to 13% ICMS and 3% PIS/ Cofins.
The SAF could be good for reaching the zero CO2 emission target by 2050 and, in addition, it could be advantageous from an economic point of view. However, currently, the use of SAF accounts for only 1% of total aviation fuel and costs almost triple that of fossil fuels.
“As the fuel (SAF) does not exist for scale production today, we are concerned about the supply and demand relationship for this fuel, which can make prices too high and impractical for the sector. So, it is very important that the law provides for mechanisms that empower the CNPE and regulatory agencies (ANP and Anac) to neutralize these problems”, said Glanzmann.
