The renewal of the KLM and Transavia fleet will be carried out using Airbus aircraft. KLM and Airbus announced the signing of an agreement for 100 aircraft, with the right to purchase another 60.
Previously, the group set Airbus planes to renew Air France's fleet as well. Thus, important customers start to opt for the European manufacturer instead of the American one.
The order is for 100 aircraft, being a mix between the A320neo and the A321neo. There are still purchase options for another 60 aircraft. Transavia will receive both the A320neo and the A321neo. KLM will receive the A321neo to replace the Boeing 737-800/900.
In addition, KLM is expected to replace the Embraer E-jet E1 and Boeing 737-700 with the Embraer E195-E2. In all, the order should earn Airbus 22 billion dollars at list price.
KLM has 50 Boeing 737 NG planes, Transavia Netherlands has 40 and Transavia France has 50. The purchase of Airbus planes may have been to standardize the fleet with the European manufacturer's planes, instead of the American one. Thus, the fleet of these companies will be Airbus planes, yet another setback for Boeing.
The configuration of the aircraft cabins was not disclosed. However, deliveries are expected to start in 2023.
In addition, the Air France-KLM group signed a letter of intent to purchase 4 Airbus A350F aircraft, the cargo version of the A350XWB that Air France already operates.
“These orders will set [Air France-KLM] group airlines on the path to improving performance while accelerating our decarbonisation trajectory. This is a big step for KLM, Transavia and Air France, who will operate the best aircraft available for their network needs," commented Benjamin Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM.
