De Havilland Canada and ZeroAvia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work on the development of a hydrogen electric motor for the Dash 8-400 aircraft.

The contract provides that De Havilland Canada will receive options to purchase 50 of ZeroAvia's hydrogen and electricity propulsion systems. The agreement does not confirm the options, which will be done in a later agreement.

Aiming to reduce CO2 emissions, ZeroAvia is working on systems for the conversion of aircraft that are already in service. Thus, if the agreement is confirmed, the companies will have to work on updating the existing aircraft.

“This program will aim to use the 2MW power train (ZA2000) for Dash 8-400 aircraft. The Dash 8-400 is one of the most reliable turboprop aircraft in the world, with more than 625 delivered to customers. The worldwide fleet of these aircraft recorded more than 11 million flight hours and carried more than 550 million passengers,” ZeroAvia said in a statement.

As for certification, De Havilland Canada will supply a unit of the Dash 8-400 that will be used for testing for the next five years.

“De Havilland strongly believes in hydrogen and electricity technology as a viable solution to decarbonising aviation. We are delighted to be collaborating with ZeroAvia in developing climate-friendly propulsion as an option for our customers around the world," said Dave Riggs, director of transformation for De Havilland Aircraft of Canada.
