On the 15th, the Australian company Qantas announced that it had decided to modernize its fleet of aircraft intended for short-term operations with Airbus. For that, it will invest in aircraft of the A320neo and A220 family, instead of choosing Boeing and Embraer.
There will be 40 firm orders, being 20 A321XLR (long-range version) and 20 A220-300, for short and medium capacity flights. There are also 94 purchase rights that can be exercised over the next decade by retiring the Boeing 717 and 737-800 aircraft.
This new agreement is in addition to the order of Qantas' low-cost subsidiary JetStar and the order of QantasLink. Thus, Airbus' total aircraft will be 299, a very large order for Airbus.
Boeing had hoped to sell the 737 MAX to cover short and medium distances, but lost to the Airbus A321neo. At the same time, Embraer hoped to sell the E-Jet E2 family, but lost to the Airbus A220 for short and medium distances. The order for the Airbus A321neo may have contributed to Qantas choosing the A220 as well, thus standardizing the company's fleet.
The extra range of the A321XLR is a plus for Qantas. In addition, the airline says the plane carries 15% more passengers compared to its current jets, making it the ideal aircraft. As for the A220, the company will have the flexibility to place it on important routes in the domestic market. Both will be equipped with Pratt engines.
