Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker has been making strong statements against Airbus over paint problems on the A350, which are said to be degrading too quickly and leaving the surface underneath exposed. Today (20), the company went further and filed a lawsuit against the European manufacturer in the London court.

"Unfortunately, all our attempts to find a constructive solution with Airbus regarding the accelerated surface degradation of our A350s have failed," the company said in a statement, concluding that it had no choice but to go to court.

23 of the company's 52 Airbus A350 model aircraft are grounded due to the problem. On another occasion, Al Baker even said that the units that have not yet had the problem are showing signs that they will also show wear. With the lawsuit, Qatar hopes that Airbus will investigate the problem in depth and propose a solution.

“We strongly believe that Airbus should conduct an investigation into this condition to conclusively establish its root cause. Without proper understanding, it is not possible for Qatar Airways to establish whether any proposed repairs will correct the underlying condition," they concluded from the airline.

Airbus also says it is seeking legal advice as it says it has tried other, more peaceful solutions, but to no avail. Furthermore, Airbus says the issue does not affect the airworthiness and safety of the model.

To make up for the shortage of the A350, Qatar is leasing other aircraft. Four Boeing 777 units would come from Cathay Pacific.
