According to Indian media, a number of contracts under the “global purchase” category are being reviewed with the aim of scrapping them or putting them on hold to prioritize contracts for domestic arms products.
Contracts include long-range air defense systems, vertical-launch surface-to-air missiles, unmanned aerial systems, towed artillery systems, Boeing P-8i surveillance aircraft and Russian MiG-29 fighter jets.
The Acquisition of 21 MiG-29 fighter jets from Russia was approved by the Defense Acquisition Board of India in July 2020. The review takes place at the same time that the “make in India” policy is implemented, which aims to strengthen the domestic industry and country's exports. In February 2021, the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation said that the Indian government also decided to purchase additional aircraft.
According to thedefensepost.com, some of these contracts have already been canceled or postponed, including the cancellation of the contract for 14 twin-engine helicopters developed by Airbus.
The move comes after a decision was made at a Defense Ministry meeting in New Delhi on Friday, India Today reported, citing government sources. The ministry prepared a list of overseas purchase plans that Indian-made items could replace.
