19-year-old Zara Rutherford has become the youngest woman in the world to fly solo around the world. She also became the first person to accomplish the feat aboard the world's fastest ultralight.
The young Belgian-British achieved the feat after taking off from the airport of Kortrijk-Wevelgem, in Belgium, and landing in the same place after 51 thousand kilometers of flight and having flown over 52 countries on 5 continents. The match took place on the 18th of August. The previous record belonged to Shaesta Wais, who managed to fly around the world at the age of 30 in 2017.
Zara spent more than the three months planned for the trip aboard the ultralight Shark UL. She was stranded on the ground for a month in Nome, Alaska, and 41 days in Russia. However, the young woman says the hardest part was in Siberia. “It was extremely cold and if the engine failed I would be hours away from a rescue. I don't know if I would survive."
The girl wants to encourage other women in the areas of science, technology and aviation. "Girls are often encouraged to be pretty, kind, helpful and sweet. I want to show young girls that they can be bold, ambitious and fulfill their dreams. Boys learn through toys, street names, history lessons and movies who could be scientists, astronauts, CEOs or presidents," he said.
The landing was accompanied by four Belgian aerobatic aircraft.
