Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar confirmed that the country should resume negotiations with the US for the purchase of the fifth-generation F-35 fighter jet. The negotiations should take place between the end of this month and the beginning of February.
After the failure of the F-35 deal, Turkey would also acquire upgraded versions of the F-16 as an alternative and 80 kits to upgrade its old F-16s. Erdogan even declared that the F-16 fighters would have been offered as an alternative to the F-35, which was denied by the US State Department.
However, the acquisition did not take place as the US was dissatisfied with Turkey's decision to acquire the Russian S-400 air defense system and initiated the exclusion of Turkey from the program.
The US claims that integration with the S-400 air defense system could reveal information about the 5th generation fighter.
Turkey has invested $1.4 billion in the F-35 program and wants to be rewarded for the expense.
“We pay so much, how will we be compensated? They said they understood us. We arranged a second meeting in the US at the end of January, beginning of February. A delegation is heading to the US in the next few days. Six F-35s made for Turkey are in a hangar. We are discussing what will happen to them. Therefore, discussions about the F-16 and F-35 continue,” said the minister.
