After years of flying around the world carrying his band, Bruce Dickinson, frontman of Iron Maiden, will no longer fly the custom Boeing 747 called Ed Force One.
Bruce, who earned his commercial pilot's license in the 1990s and created his aircraft maintenance company Cardiff in 2012 and later changed its name to Caerdav, is passionate about aviation.
“With a passenger plane, everything is internal. Nobody says, 'Wow! Wasn't that great?' They're thinking about the rest of their day. Your job as an airline pilot is to deliver them safely and be invisible. That's really good for me because it's the complete opposite of what I do when I sing," he said.
Bruce will no longer fly because of FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and Icao (International Civil Aviation Organization) rules, which dictate that commercial pilots must retire at age 65.
“I am 63 years old – I will be 64 in August. You know, when you get to 65, if you're an airline pilot, they just take you out, right? So I'll be sitting in the back seat."
As an aviation enthusiast, Bruce even said that his days at the airline were more “rock and roll” than the hours he spent with Iron Maiden on stage.
