Qatar Airways has confirmed a large order for Boeing jets, which includes 34 777-8 freighters and an option for 16 more. The confirmation was made today, January 31, in Washington, United States.
Qatar Airways had previously ordered 60 passenger Boeing 777X units. The agreement announced today provides for the conversion of 20 of these units to freighters.
The freighter will have a large carrying capacity and will have the longest range among freighters. In addition, the freighter must be more efficient in fuel consumption and have lower emissions of pollutants. Consequently, operating costs must be lower. The first deliveries are expected to take place in 2027.
The order may include up to 50 Boeing 737 MAX units as part of the package, with 25 firm orders and a further 25 purchase options.
So the package can reach up to 100 Boeing aircraft units. The deal appears to be a response to Airbus, as Airbus last week revoked an agreement with Qatar Airways for 50 new A321neo aircraft over a contractual dispute involving the A350.
The business is valued at over 20 billion dollars.
