The agreement for the acquisition of 28 units of the A320neo family aircraft, closed as a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Airbus and Jazeera Airways at the 2021 Dubai Airshow, has finally been approved by the company's board.
The agreement valued at 3.4 billion dollars will see Jazeera Airways modernize and expand its fleet, which currently has 17 Airbus aircraft, all A320neo. Of the 28 aircraft ordered, 20 are of the A320neo model and 8 of the A321neo model.
With the acquisition of the A321neo, with greater passenger capacity and greater range, the company will be able to operate new destinations in Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Southeast Asia.
“Jazeera Airways is pleased to further extend its long-term relationship with Airbus with this significant new order. We will effectively double the size of our current fleet to 35 aircraft by 2026… We have exciting expansion plans ahead, which will further increase our contribution to the Kuwaiti economy and the travel industry in particular.” Said President Marwan Boodai.
The purchase of two CFM engines was also approved by the board. The engines must serve as spare parts. The purchase of the engines reached a list price of 32.2 million dollars.
The purchase could also mean that Jazeera Airways is moving away from the low-cost carrier model, as the company's newest planes come in two classes. Low-cost airlines usually have only one economy class on their aircraft.
