In order to achieve decarbonization targets, Turkish Airlines seeks to develop sustainable fuels. To advance this technology, the company has already started fueling some of its planes with SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).
In the program “Our route is the future”, Turkish launched its first flight fueled with sustainable fuel, the TK1823, which went from Istanbul to Paris on February 2, operated by the Airbus A321. The company did not disclose the percentage of SAF used.
For now, the flight runs only once a week, but the company has plans to add more frequencies on this route. The fuel will be received from the Neste company, being second generation and made from waste and renewable raw materials, with products such as used cooking oil.
“We are the airline that flies to more countries than any other in the world. This also means that we are the airline that presents our guests with the richest biodiversity. Our first flight that uses sustainable resources is part of this vision. We conduct our work to achieve sustainability with this mindset and responsibility,” said Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines
In addition, in collaboration with the University of Bogaziçi, it is developing the Microalgae-Based Sustainable Biojet Fuel (MICRO-JET) project. The project is expected to develop a carbon-negative biorefinery, which would be a first in Europe and Turkey.
The use of SAF as an alternative to reduce aviation emissions in the short term is nothing new, with companies such as British Airways, Air France-KLM, United Airlines, Embraer, among others, making their efforts in favor of the use of fuel.
