Xiamen Airlines, a Chinese airline, performed its first carbon-free flight on February 4. The flight, which took place as a celebration of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The games, which take place in Beijing from February 4 to 20, are completely carbon neutral, with organizers committing to measures such as modifying previously used buildings, using vehicles powered by clean and renewable energy, among others. Beijing is the first city in the world to host both the summer and winter Olympics.
The Xiamen flight took the airline a step further in the airline's commitment to being the first in China to sell carbon-neutral tickets to the public. The flight from Xiamen to Beijing took place aboard a Boeing 787-8, registration B-2761. Lasting 2 hours and 13 minutes, the company claims that this was China's first carbon-free flight.
The company used strategies such as optimizing flight paths, not using single-use plastics and reducing all the unnecessary weight of the plane, and consequently, the necessary fuel.
Tickets are sold for about $1.60 more to offset the emissions from the flight itself. In addition, the company seeks to raise funds for ecosystem restoration across China. During the trial period, this additional amount will be optional. However, the company intends to implement the system definitively in the future.
This is not such an uncommon practice in aviation. Other companies are already following this trend. Here in Brazil, Gol already participates in schemes like this.
