All Nipon Airways announced that it has partnered with Joby Aviation to bring eVTOL to air taxi services. According to the airline's plans, travel times between Osaka Station and Kansai International Airport will be substantially reduced.
Toyota, the auto giant, is also involved in the deal in a major stake. The automaker wants to explore opportunities such as ground transportation.
Joby Aviation's five-seat aircraft "will make convenient, emission-free air travel an everyday reality."
The aircraft will be able to fly at up to 321 kilometers per hour and will have a range of 241 kilometers on a single charge. Joby Aviation stated that the aircraft has a low noise emission profile, so it can operate in urban areas without major problems.
Japan is a country with a large urban population, with 92% of its population living in these areas. A journey that would take around 40 minutes on the road can take only 15 minutes if it is carried out with eVTOL, a significant gain in productivity.
“We are honored to be working with ANA, an airline that has deservedly received the 5-star rating from SKYTRAX for nine years in a row, and we look forward to working closely with them to bring our airlift service to reality in Japan.” said the company's CEO, JoeBen Bevirt.
Joby's eVTOL has completed over 1000 test flights.
