Efforts for sustainable aviation can include software data analysis solutions to favor both fuel economy and company finances. The newest airline to try this kind of solution is All Nipon Airways.
Japan's largest airline partnered with GE Digital to implement Fuel Insight software. The software analyzes flight data in order to plan the flight to improve efficiency on three different fronts. • Fuel economy; • Airspace efficiency and • Flight crew performance.
In addition to managing the flight itself, the software must optimize the processes of engine starting, reverse thrust at idle and normal climb.
“Our mission is not just to save fuel, but also to incorporate ESG/SDG perspectives, use Fuel Insight for more accurate observations, and make policy decisions based on data and prioritized actions. We will support and encourage timely decision making and pursue execution and results,” said Takashi Kondo, Vice President, ANA Flight Operations Standards.
In many cases, airlines are turning to artificial intelligence to reduce the environmental impacts of aviation. Some software promises a reduction of environmental impact in the order of 60%. There are also software that can influence pilots in some decisions to favor fuel economy.
“Two major challenges in operating airlines today relate to fuel costs and carbon emissions. GE feels a responsibility to make our world better for future generations, and that includes ensuring our customers are empowered to reduce the impact of their technology and environmental footprint on their operations as well,” said Frank Siegers, general manager of the GE business.
