Amid tensions between Russia, Ukraine and NATO, many airlines have already stopped flying to Ukraine or substantially reduced their flights there. Over the weekend, The Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Brussels, Switzerland, Eurowings and Austrian) said it will suspend its operations to the country.
The last operations to Kiev and Odessa took place this weekend, for the evacuation of civilians from Ukraine.
With the threat of armed conflict at any moment, airlines and leasing companies do not want to fly over the site because of recent cases of shooting down of civilian aircraft by military forces.
However, Lufthansa will continue to fly to Lviv, in western Ukraine, albeit with reduced frequencies.
The group said flights to Kiev and Odessa would be suspended until the end of February, but did not rule out the possibility of extending that suspension.
The tensions also affected Ukraine's own airlines, which had their planes stored in other European countries.
Leasing companies have threatened to suspend insurance on aircraft operating in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government even paid for aircraft insurance to try to avoid the situation, but it was not possible.
Despite all the tension, Ukraine does not want to keep its airspace closed.
On the other side of the effort to remove civil planes from Ukrainian airspace, Wizz Air and Ryanair intend to maintain their operations, including discounted prices on flights departing from Ukraine or to Ukraine.
