After a long tension for a Russian invasion of Ukraine, the operation began this morning (24), with a military presence in Donbass. There were reports of explosions in Kiev, the capital of the country, and in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the severing of diplomatic ties with Russia and the adoption of martial law throughout Ukraine. The law consists in the adoption of military laws, instead of civil ones.
"We are introducing martial law throughout our country. A minute ago, I had a conversation with President Biden. The US has already begun to rally international support. Today each of you must remain calm. Stay home if We are working. The army is working. The entire defense and security sector is working. No panic. We are strong. We are ready for anything. We will win everyone because we are Ukraine," the Ukrainian president said in a statement.
Russia says the military operation against Ukraine will last as long as necessary. According to Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Moscow wants "neutral status" for Ukraine, in addition to its demilitarization and the elimination of what it called the Nazis from the country.
As for the sanctions that have been imposed on Russia by several countries, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, Peskov said that Russia is prepared to face the problem and that soon the emotional reaction of the financial market should stabilize. Furthermore, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that there will be a strong and painful response for the United States.
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke nationally about what he called a special military operation in Ukraine. “I made the decision to conduct a special military operation. Our analysis concluded that our confrontation with these [Ukrainian] forces is inevitable. A few words for those who would be tempted to intervene: Russia will respond immediately and you will have consequences you have never had before in its history."
For Russia, Ukraine's entry into NATO is a security threat. The Russian president wants a formal declaration that Ukraine will not be part of the military alliance. Russia has more than 150,000 troops, tanks and missiles positioned on the border with Ukraine.
Putin says Russia will not budge in its demands in the crisis, as for him the interests and security of Russian citizens are non-negotiable. Even so, he says Russia is open to a dialogue to find diplomatic solutions to more complex problems.
