After the start of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian airspace was closed to civilian flights. The country's government cites a high risk to flight safety. The aviation regulator in Europe also warned about the risks of flying over the territory of borders with Russia and Belarus.
A series of NOTAMs (Notice to Air Missions) were issued with restrictions on flights from various flight regions of the country (FIRs), such as Kiev, Dnipro, Lviv, Odesa and Simferopol, in addition to UIR Kiev.
Russian and Belarusian airspace was also partially closed at the borders with Ukraine. Restrictions are indefinite.
Flight tracking platforms showed all the planes bypassing Ukraine, as in the opening image of this story.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said airspace in Russia and Belarus within 100 nautical miles of the borders with Ukraine could pose security risks.
"In particular, there is a risk of both intentional targeting and misidentification of civil aircraft," the agency said in a conflict zone statement.
Malaysia Airlines civil flight MH17 was shot down in 2014 in eastern Ukraine, resulting in fears of further shootings of civilian planes by the military.
In recent days, several companies have suspended or diverted their flights from the region. Even companies from Ukraine itself took their planes out of the territory.
