Nigeria's new airline, Rano Air, will begin operations exclusively with second-hand Embraer ERJ-145 jets soon.

The 4 regional jets are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, having already been operated by ExpressJet, a US company.

Recently, many companies want the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the regulatory bodies in Nigeria. Rano Air is another one of these. There is not much information about this, but it is known that around 23 airlines are looking to start operations, as the Civil Aviation Authority of Nigeria (NCAA) said in April last year.

According to sources, NG Eagle and Green Africa Airways, which are already at an advanced stage of acquiring the Certificate. Rano Air, Northeast Shuttle and many others have also expressed interest but are still being considered.

Although it has recently come to the public's attention that Rano Air wants to operate regional jets, Nigerian experts say the country does not need more airlines, but larger aircraft.

The country is experiencing a lack of available seats on aircraft and would need larger planes to compete with foreign companies.

“If airlines use larger aircraft that can take more, it's cheaper than two or three airlines doing the same route, and at the end of the day they don't get crowded,” said An aviation consultant, Muyiwa Lucas.
