Four Russian Air Force fighter jets invaded Swedish airspace east of the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. The Swedish Defense Ministry released images of the Russian jets. The Russian fighters were two Sukhoi Su-27s and two Su-24s.
The incident occurred yesterday, Wednesday (2), and put the Swedish Air Force on high alert level.
The Russian fighters were briefly in Swedish airspace and were intercepted by the Swedish JAS39 Gripen fighter. The Swedish Air Force said the situation was quickly brought under control, but the incident was taken very seriously.
“This demonstrates that our readiness is good. We were there to guarantee the territorial integrity and borders of Sweden. We have complete control of the situation," said Carl-Johan Edström, commander of the Swedish Air Force.
The military considered the Russian maneuver risky, mainly because of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. While the invasion of Swedish airspace may have been accidental, Moscow has said that if Sweden joins NATO there will be serious consequences.
