According to data announced by Lufthansa Cargo itself, its 2021 results were the best ever recorded.

Despite the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, demand for cargo has remained high thanks to ecommerce. Thus, the aircraft occupancy rate improved by 1.7%, reaching 71%, and the offer improved by 8.7%, reaching 10.1 billion tons of freight kilometers offered. In the 12-month period, a total of 7.2 billion tonnes of freight-kilometers were sold compared to the previous 6.5 billion.

These figures ensured revenue of 3.80 billion euros, compared to 2.76 billion the previous year. Adjusted gross profit before interest and tax (EBIT) doubled to €1,493 million compared to €772 million in full-year 2020. A total of 7.2 billion tonnes of freight-kilometres were sold in 2021, up from 6.5 billion billion by 2020.

“In addition to good revenues, the successful completion of our cost reduction program was a key factor. In 2022, we will continue to invest in customer focus, air transport innovation and sustainability,” said Dorothea von Boxberg, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Lufthansa Cargo.

Dorothea von Boxberg admitted that the company owes these results to its employees, customers and partners. In addition, Dorothea said that the company will continue to focus on sustainability and the decarbonization of the sector, always with the aim of expanding the use of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).

Lufthansa Cargo is a pilot customer for the first industrial power-to-liquid (PtL) synthetic fuel plant. The company will work on the development and research for the production of synthetic jet fuel, a synthetically produced liquid hydrocarbon. Renewable electricity is the main source of energy, and water and carbon dioxide (CO2) are the main resources used to produce the fuel.

Lufthansa Technik, together with chemical giant BASF, will apply the “AeroSHARK” film, which simulates the skin of sharks, reducing friction with the air in order to reduce fuel consumption.

“The issue of scarce capacity will continue to concern our customers this year. With the commercialization of the capabilities of our first A321 freighter, which has just debuted, we want to offer customers new options for the growing e-commerce sector, especially in the medium-haul segment. But we still see that the situation in air freight remains dynamic and that we have to react to developments in the world market in the short term and remain flexible,” she said of the challenges.

The converted passenger jet will make its first commercial cargo flight from Frankfurt to Dublin on March 15. In addition, last year, the cargo company completed the modernization of its fleet of Boeing 777F freighters, currently made up of 15 aircraft, considered the most efficient in the category.
