A Boeing 737 MAX took off from Seattle on its way to China on Monday, signaling that it may be close to returning to service in Chinese skies after 3 years grounded due to fatal accidents. China was the first country to land the model after the crash, and it is the only major market where the MAX has yet to return to service.
Boeing Chief Executive David Calhoun said in January that his company was preparing to deliver the planes as early as the first quarter. The planemaker said in a statement that it continues to work with regulators and customers on returning the MAX to service around the world.
China, which once accounted for 17% of sales of the current Boeing 737 MAX, currently sees its domestic demand slackening due to rising coronavirus cases. So Chinese airlines are in no hurry to get the MAX back in the skies.
In early December, China's commercial aviation regulator made a list of corrections needed before the Boeing 737 MAX returned to commercial service, which would have been earlier this year.
According to sources, China Southern Airlines could be the first company to return with the MAX. More than 100 units of the jet have already been built and have not yet been delivered to Chinese companies.
