Engine maker Rolls Royce has signed an agreement with oil giant Air bp to use 10% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) when testing its engines at Rolls Royce's facilities in Derby and Bristol, UK and Dahlewitz , Germany.
The deal is part of Rolls Royce's drive for broader sustainability. The company expects others to follow this path. The new fuel mixture should be used by 2023, the date for the end of the agreement. Deliveries of SAF will begin soon, with the company using around three million liters of SAF per year according to agreement.
Rolls Royce said SAF will be derived primarily from waste-based raw materials such as used cooking oil.
About a year ago, Rolls Royce announced that it was working on the UltraFan demonstrator, which will be the largest aircraft engine in the world. Air bp will also provide the fuel needed for testing the engine that will use 100% SAF later this year.
The engine maker has also confirmed that its Trent engines will be 100% SAF compliant by 2023. In addition, the Trent XWB and Pearl engines have already been tested at 100% SAF with no issues.
