Air Canada has signed an agreement for the acquisition of 26 new Airbus A321neo XLR (Extra Long Range – extra long range), where deliveries will begin in the first quarter of 2024 and are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.

The agreement announced today, 22, also includes options for 14 more aircraft of the same model that can be exercised between 2027 and 2030.

The aircraft have enough range to serve all North American markets, as well as some ocean liners, such as the UK, increasing competition with other rival companies. The A321neo XLR is designed to deliver a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 23%, with a range of up to 8700 km on flights of up to 11 hours.

Air Lease Corporation and AerCap will lease 20 units. The remaining six will be purchased directly from Airbus.

According to Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau, the agreement is an important part of the company's strategy to enhance the customer experience, advance its environmental ambitions and improve overall cost efficiency.

The A321XLR will carry up to 182 passengers, with 14 Air Canada Signature Class, Air Canada Business Class, and 168 Economy Class. So far, the manufacturer of the engines for the aircraft has not yet been defined.

The new aircraft will also allow Air Canada to replace older, less fuel-efficient models. Air Canada projects up to 17% fuel savings per seat compared to previous generation aircraft.
