On March 16, Fuji Dream Airlines flew from Shizuoka base to Nagoya Komaki airport, Japan, in its SAF-fueled Embraer E175.
Euglena, a company specializing in the cultivation of the alga of the same name, Euglena, in partnership with the FDA, provided SUSTEO. It is a fuel made from used cooking oil and Euglena algae.
SUSTEO emits CO2 in the combustion stage just like fossil fuels, but the alga Euglena absorbs CO2 through photosynthesis during its life cycle, thus achieving carbon neutrality.
SAF is still very little used, since its costs are high. However, using algae could become a complement to other biofuel feedstocks, as there is usually not enough supply for large-scale SAF application.
