Etihad's specially painted Airbus A350-1000 is expected to make Etihad's decarbonisation technologies viable, contributing to the company's goal of being carbon neutral by 2050. The aircraft has been dubbed the Sustainability50.

According to the company, the Airbus is not just from Etihad or the United Arab Emirates, but is an aircraft for everyone that will be used to test sustainable solutions. The plane is open to startups and companies that want to test their technologies and ideas regarding the environment.

The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-powered Airbus A350 is one of the most efficient aircraft in the world, with 25% less fuel burn and CO2 emissions than previous-generation twin-aisle aircraft.

The A350 will be the sister aircraft of Etihad's Boeing 787 "greenliner", which made a special flight from London to Abu Dhabi with a 72% reduction in CO2 emissions, fueled with 38% SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).

Among the technologies that will be tested on the A350 are the use of SAF, software flight planning, weight reduction using sustainable products, among others.

The company's CEO, Tony Douglas, recalled that the use of SAF is still very difficult and expensive, but that the plane will use these and other technologies that will make a difference in emissions.
