China Southern Airlines said it expects to add 39 Boeing 737 MAXs to its fleet in 2022 and 103 by the end of 2024, for a total of 142 new 737 MAX family jets.
Last year, China Southern Airlines aimed to have 48 new B737 MAX in 2022. Despite the reduction, new deliveries of the 737 MAX in China are good news for Boeing, which has a very important market in the country. Boeing has 724 orders for the MAX assigned to unidentified customers.
The world's main regulatory bodies have already authorized the return of the MAX, however the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has not yet fully done so.
In December 2021, the CAAC issued an AD, stating that the MAX could return when all necessary changes are made and pilots are retrained on the updated systems.
In January, CSA completed a MAX test flight to and from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
However, the low demand for flights in China, where the policy is zero tolerance for covid, may explain why Chinese companies are still not in need of new planes.
According to planespotters.net, China Southern Airlines has a fleet of 213 Boeing 737s, of which 24 are Max 8s. Its total fleet is 640 aircraft, 297 of which are Airbus A320 family aircraft.
